David Cross on record reviews
- Pitchfork: Do you ever get anything out of album reviews?
- David C: Not really. Unless there's a reference, like, "If you like Cat Power's later stuff, it's sort of like that." Then I'll check it out. A verbose, prosaic review which mentions whistling winds and the timeless feeling of jade doesn't mean anything to me; I don't need a novella telling me about how an album is like a fine meal. But I'll go to Other Music in New York and nine times out of 10 I like what they recommend. The Onion does a pretty good job, too. But I've gotten burned a couple times when everybody loves a new record, and then I get it and don't love it.
